LOUISVALE- HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE

Cape Town March 2021 - The most-anticipated date on the wine calendar, for Louisvale Wines, is of course harvest season. This is when the Lousivale vineyards in Stellenbosch are carefully monitored for the perfect timing for the annual fiesta. This is when everyone on the farm is involved, excited, and full of eager anticipation. All Louisvale grapes are harvested by hand in the firm belief that this special care and attention adds to the finesse of the final product – a range of locally produced and award-winning wines. As the harvest period nears the end, and with the incomprehensible stresses that the alcohol industry has faced over the last few months, this 2021 harvest at Louisvale in Stellenbosch is greeted with celebrations from the entire team and especially from Simon Smith, Louisvale’s winemaker of 32 years. While coping with a hectic schedule, Simon has taken some time to share his observations about this year’s pickings.

When asked about any disparities to the last harvest, Simon said: “Our Chardonnay cultivar is down this year in terms of quantity because of environmental factors, mainly unideal weather conditions during the summer months however, the ultra-premium and trusted quality of Louisvale’s Chardonnay will still be as exceptional as ever and we cannot wait to start bottling this new vintage of our signature blend.” Good news, however, comes from this year’s Cabernet Sauvignon: “As the current rate of growth and with environmental factors working in our favour, our Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards are the most fruitful and we can’t wait to showcase our finest caliber of this blend.” In the next three weeks, just 13 weeks after the harvesting process began, Louisvale will start the bottling process, kicking off with the Sauvignon Blanc and then the Unwooded Chardonnay, Chavant, and finally the Chardonnay. Although it’s still too early to speculate which blends will be showcased during the award season, the prospects for all the Louisvale wines produced from this year’s harvest, are excellent both in terms of quality and yield.
