After entering an unprecedented chapter for wine auctions in 2020, the Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Auction returns live and online on 2 October 2021, preceded by a compelling 2-week online charity auction offering rare and unique wine collections to raise funds for the Guild’s Protégé Programme.
There will be two separate and distinct auctions this year, and both will be hosted by international auction house Bonhams. The auction excitement commences with the Protégé Programme Auction that opens on Friday, 17 September and closes on Monday, 4 October 2021.
The Protégé Programme Auction held earlier this year introduced the theme and hashtag #BuyForTheFuture, paving the way for the Guild’s second Charity Auction this October to raise much-needed funds to ensure that the Protégé Programme can continue its cause. By participating in this Auction, bidders will contribute towards a programme that nurtures young talent and enriches the lives of individuals who ordinarily would not have had the opportunity. Buyers will also be supporting the future of the South African wine industry.
Andrea Mullineux, CWG Chair: "Working together towards excellence and uplifting not only our fellow members, but those who want to prosper within the wine industry today and into the future, is the ethos that defines the Cape Winemakers Guild."
The 2021 Nedbank CWG Auction will be hosted live and online at 10:00 (London time) on Saturday 2 October 2021 by international Auction house Bonhams, showcasing the immense diversity of world-class South African wine. All the wines are made exclusively for the Auction by CWG members who are recognised as some of South Africa's leading winemakers. All wines are tasted blind and selected by specialist panels of Guild members to ensure that only wines of excellence are offered on the Auction.
Bidders will be able to bid via the Bonhams website and watch the Auction in real-time as it progresses, bid by telephone, or place proxy commission bids with Bonhams in advance. Bonhams in London will also be open on the day for bidders wishing to attend and bid in person.
Bonhams Senior International Director of Wine and Master of Wine Richard Harvey said: “Bonhams is very pleased to be continuing to support the work of the Cape Winemakers Guild in these very challenging times for the South African wine industry.”
The 2021 Nedbank CWG Auction is the inaugural year for Samantha O'Keefe, and JD Pretorius presenting their first wines at the Auction, and three esteemed members will take their final bow. Jeremy Walker will conclude his CWG journey with his "Au Revoir" blend; Jacques Borman's Epilogue will act as an ode to his CWG journey, and Jeff Grier's swansong year takes flight with an elegant and gracious Cap Classique.
Among these stellar lots, buyers can look forward to outstanding cool climate white wines and stalwart reds that underpin excellence and consistent quality produced by members of the Guild.
Nedbank Group Chief Executive, Mike Brown, comments on Nedbank’s long-standing relationship with the CWG: "If ever there has been a true test of the strength and resilience of the South African wine industry, the past 18 months must be it. At Nedbank, we firmly believe that this resilience is the direct result of hard work. The Cape Winemakers Guild has long been a leading light in this regard and the work it does through its Development Trust.”
